Together Towards Capital of Culture
We aim to find and to fully take advantage of the gathered creativity we know exists in Umeå. It will take great commitment, not only from the municipality and established culture institutions, but also from the volunteers and professional culture workers, the business community, the young and old audience, the athletes and everybody else with an interest in creating a better place to live!
What are the Strengths of Umeå?
The candidacy of Umeå is based on a broader meaning of “culture". The concept of the Northern European Capital of Culture contains not only the traditional expressions of culture and the fine arts, but also includes recreation, sports, communication, urban development and the quality of life in general.
Umeå is Known to be Brave
The cultural life of Umeå is varied and rich, with many professional producers of theatre, music, dance, film etc, as well as thousands of volunteers at different organizations. In Umeå we are known to be brave and our cultural expressions are many, diversified and artistically interesting to a broad audience.
Why Candidate?
To be nominated European Capital of Culture will bring attention to Umeå that in many ways will strengthen the cultural diversity and image of Umeå. For an example it may enrich the audience´s choice of cultural expressions, help establish new businesses, and increase the opportunities of international contacts.

Stage 2014
An effort to create more concert opportunities for young, local musicians and promoters in Umeå. "Studion", a venue at Umeå Folkets Hus, has been made available, a number of Fridays and Saturdays, to volunteer promoters and local musicians not yet established in Umeå.
Cultural hits
Several famous persons have given their support to Umeå as a candidate for European Capital of Culture, by hitting a steel pipe with a stick. The idea is to collect 2014 cultural hits (in Swedish only).
