What is a European Capital of Culture?

The European Capital of Culture is an annual event of the European Union. The aim is to highlight the richness and diversity of European cultures and to promote greater mutual understanding between European citizens.

The program of a European Capital of Culture will last for a year, and will add and offer value to the European community. One main goal of the year is to increase international exchange. The nominated cities are chosen from different parts of Europe, to emphasize on the diversity of cultural expressions throughout the EU.

The European Council will make the final selection of cities. The chosen cities will receive a grant from the European Commission.
